He was descended from an old Dutch family that lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His ancestors, however, had resided farther east prior to their location in that state.

He was a hatter by trade.
He passed the last years of his life with a daughter, Elizabeth, who lived at Port Matilda, in Centre County.
