General Notes: Husband - Nicholas Scull

Nicholas Scull, the founder of the Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, branch of the family, is thought to have belonged to the Irish Sculls, inasmuch as Edward Scull, no doubt a younger brother, was in 1706 apprenticed to John Dennis, of Cork, Ireland. He came to America "by consent of his friends for his better advancement in the world," and is described as a "young man of quick disposition."
Nicholas Scull, mentioned above, arrived in the good ship "Bristol," at the port of Philadelphia, September 10, 1686, bringing with him seven servants. With his brother, John Scull, who had arrived several months before, he joined William Penn's colony. The two brothers were connected with Major Jasper Farmer, of county Cork, Ireland, (who came over with his family in the same ship) in the management of eight thousand acres of land, ten miles from Philadelphia, called Whitemarsh. The descendants of John Scull spread over lower New Jersey. A branch of the family is also to be found in Hartford County, North Carolina. Their origin is unknown, but a Colonel John Gambrier Scull, said to have been a relation of the English admiral, Lord Gambrier, was a partisan officer in the Revolution and was confined a long time in the prison ships at Charleston. Nicholas is known to have been a member of the Society of Friends. He was a man of considerable substance and occupied a prominent position in the community. He purchased, July 9, 1688, at what is now called Whitemarsh, four hundred acres of land, which in his will are designated as "Springfield Manor," and which was sold in 1713 by his heirs. His will is preserved in Philadelphia. He was the father of a number of children, among whom was Nicholas Scull.
