General Notes: Husband - Christian Wolff Slagle


He graduated from Washington College September 23rd, 1840, studied law with Hon. Thomas M. T. McKennan, of Washington, was admitted to the bar in 1843. He went to Fairfield, Iowa, and into partnership with Mr. George Acheson in 1843. This partnership continued until Mr. Acheson's death in April 1881. C. W. Slagle was one of the founders of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society; was one of the warmest friends and supporter throughout his life of the public library of Fairfield; was one of its managing directors and its treasurer at the time of his death. He was Regent of Iowa State University from 1878 to 1882; President of the State University in 1877 and 1878; Commissioner of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1879, '80 and '81. He was an original stockholder, one of its directors, and Vice President of the First National Bank of Fairfield. For many years a trustee in the Congregational Church. He was first a Whig in politics and afterwards an active Republican. In 1880 he was nominated for the office of circuit judge, but was compelled by his increasing business cares and the illness of his partner to decline election.
