Year of birth 1839. [HVC 1879, 489]
He remained with his parents until 1862, and then enlisted in the army, becoming a member of company M., 5th Penn. cavalry, and under command of Gen. Butler. On the 8th and 16th of June, 1864, he participated in the engagements before Pittsburgh, and was in quite a number of other battles. He served during the war, and was honorably discharged on the 28th of May, 1865. Soon after his return home he went to contracting in the oil business. In 1866 he began to sink wells on his own accord, leasing land upon which to drill. His prospects at first were anything but flattering; ere long, however, he met with better success. He was extensively engaged in agriculture and the production of oil for many years and had a large family. Residing in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, in 1919.
