He was a native of the parish of Donaghmore, County Down, Ireland, born in the latter part of the seventeenth century. He was an extensive farmer and a prominent man of his locality, a warden of the Episcopal Church and succeeded in that office by his son, his posterity and successors in the incumbency liv­ing at the same spot where he did and owning the same land through the early 20th century.
