General Notes: Husband - John P. Baughman

He first attended "Heralds Subscription School," taught by Mr. A. A. Altman, who afterward was county surveyor for Westmoreland County, and then continued his studies in the public schools adjacent to his home until eighteen years of age, in the meantime, when school was not in session, working on a farm. At Greensburg, Pennsylvania, February 20, 1864, he enlisted in Company I, Eleventh Pennsylvania Regiment, under Colonel Richard Coulter, and participated in the following battles: Battle of the Wilderness, Yellow Stone Tavern, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Weldon Railroad, in front of Petersburg, Gravel Run, Five Points, west of Petersburg. His company numbered ninety in May, and the following month just eleven were left to report for duty, of which number Mr. Baughman was one. He had four bullet holes in his clothes, but never received even as much as a scratch on his person. He was mustered out of the service of the United States government at Washington, D. C., July 1, 1865, and arrived home in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, July 8, 1865. He took up his abode in 1888, in the town of Jeannette, was engaged in the real estate business and farming, from both of which lines he derived a comfortable livelihood. He served as burgess of Jeannette from March, 1892, to March, 1893, and again from March, 1897, to March, 1900, and the fact that he was elected on the Democratic ticket by a large majority in a strong Republican town is ample proof of his popularity. Beginning from the organization of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jeannette, Mr. Baughman was an active member and served in the capacity of deacon. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. beginning in 1867; and of Greensburg Lodge, No. 50; and a member of Jeannette Lodge, No. 701; of Jr. O. A. M. beginning in 1889, of which he was treasurer; Chrystal Council, No. 300; also G. A. R., Captain W. R. Jones Post, No. 411. He was active in building and loan circles for years, and served as president of the Gem Building and Loan Association beginning about 1890. He was also a member of board of trade, and did much toward assisting in building up Jeannette. He was distinctly a self-made man, starting first as coal miner, later butchering and mercantile, and finally in the real estate business, and became one of the solid prosperous citizens of the county.
