He read medicine with James Taylor, M. D., of West Fairfield, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He graduated at Jefferson Medical College, of Philadelphia, in the spring of 1854, and located in Armagh, Indiana County, on the first of May of that year.

He was assistant surgeon in the 2d Pennsylvania volunteers, eight months, surgeon of 193d Pennsylvania volunteers for six months, and acting assistant surgeon United States army for sixteen months.
