He remained on his father's farm in Donegal township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, during his early years, and was educated chiefly in the German language, attending the English school but three months.
After his marriage he settled in Buffalo township, Washington County, where he remained until 1878; then came to a home in Claysville, where he lived a retired life. His original farm comprised ninety acres, but he added to it until he owned 228 acres of excellent land. Politically he was formerly a Whig, but later a member of the Prohibition party. In church relations he was connected with the United Brethren Church at Zion Chapel.
