General Notes: Husband - John Graff

He emigrated to the United States in the year 1783. For a time he lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and then moved to Westmoreland County, where the remainder of his life was passed. He owned a farm and also a distillery and became a man of some consequence in his community.

He came to America in 1783 with his uncle Wm. Friedt, his mother's brother. They landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and went to Lancaster County, where they spent several years with cousins. They afterwards decided to go further west, and travelled together through Dauphin, Juniata, Mifflin, Huntingdon, Blair and Cambria Counties.
John Graff settled six miles from Greensburg, Westmoreland County, the county seat, where he purchased a farm of 200 acres in 1792, and lived on it until his death, at the age of 57 years. His last words were "Jesus take me quickly." He was an active business man, strictly honest in all his dealings and successful in his undertakings. He was modest and retiring in his manners, a kind and loving father, being very particular about the associates of his children and the books they read. He was a member of the German Lutheran Church near Pleasant Unity, and months before he died spent much of his time in prayer.

General Notes: Wife - Barbara Baum

She was a descendant of the Waldensians, who suffered extreme hardships and persecution on account of their faith.

The place of her birth was near the Burnt Cabins in Path Valley. [GF, 10]
She was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. [HAC 1914, 614]

When eight years old she was captured while out in the woods, a short distance from home, and carried off several miles to their huts by a party of Indians. She would have been scalped and murdered, perhaps, had it not been for an old Indian who, when starving in the cold winter months, had received kindness from the family. On returning home in the evening he recognized the little nine year old girl and pled for her release. After considerable Indian talk he pinned up her clothes and told her to run for her life, and doing so she made her escape.

At the age of fourteen, she was the equal of any laborer in the harvest field. Even before that age, she and her father would make a "double team" on the farm. On one occasion when all the hands had retired from the field, and she alone had persevered to the end of a long summer's day, while sitting on a log and waiting for mate to accompany her homeward, she said as she rose, "I believe I'd rather sit than walk." "I wonder if that is what they call tired." [HIC 1880, 360]

At the age of eighteen she was married and became the mother of twelve children. Twenty-five years after her marriage she was left a widow with the care of a large farm and family. The children were all at home, and the three eldest sons assisted her in the management of affairs. She was a member of the United Brethren Church. Many incidents are related of her Christian life which show her to have been a devoted Christian.
