The Sherrards (sometimes the name is spelled Sherred and Shearer) were of Huguenot ancestry, members of the family having originally set out from France to escape religious persecution and having fled to Scotland, settling in the Lowlands. Later they took up their home in County Derry, Ireland, near the village of Newton Limavady.
