He received his education in the public schools in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. When he commenced business for himself he embarked in the line of cabinetmaking and undertaking and came to do business over a wide extent of territory. Even when advancing in years he was still as active as ever, and looked after the needs of his large business with the care it demanded.
Though business claimed a large share of his time, Mr. Waddell served in various official positions, serving three years as burgess of Mercersburg, and about twelve years as a member of the town council. He was originally a Whig in political sentiment, and was a stanch Republican from the organization of the party.
