General Notes: Husband - Matthew Shields

Salem Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA - a farmer

He was an ardent democrat. In 1857 he was the democratic candidate for office but was defeated by the "Know-Nothing" party. In 1858 he ran for the same office and was elected and also re-elected in 1859.

He was very active in the political affairs of the region, served several terms in the State Legislature of Pennsylvania, and was a member of the Governor's Foot Guard, serving in the office of lieutenant-colonel.
