He grew up on the old family homestead, attended the public schools at Wheatland, Pennsylvania, and spent two terms at the Edinboro Normal School. He took a full course in Eastman's College, of Poughkeepsie, New York, and in January, 1876, entered Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, and graduated in the class of 1880. In the fall of that year he began reading law in the office of Stranahan & Mehard, of Mercer, was admitted to the bar in June, 1882, and the following October began practice in Sharon. In Octo-ber, 1884, he formed a partnership with Thomas Tanner, and the firm of Tan-ner & Shilling became one of the best known law firms of the county. He was a director in the Sharon National Bank, was a Republican in politics, and belonged to the Masonic fraternity. [HMC 1888, 755]

In 1891, Mr. Shilling became interested in manufacturing. He was president of the Sharon Boiler Works and also the Sharon Foundry Co. and was the general sales agent for the Wheeler Water Tube boiler.
