General Notes: Husband - Mattern Sphar

It appears that he went to America before the rest of the family came in 1749, and probably married Mary Shively in Virginia. He appears to have been with his family at their home on Opequon Creek near Charles Town in Virginia. He and his wife, along with Haunce (who was Hans Ulrich), Henry, Walter and Rebecca made a journey westward to look for land in about 1780 near where his brother John had settled. Indians attacked the party near Scenery Hill, which was about 40 miles north of Short Creek, Virginia, (north of Wheeling), and two people were killed. Reports are conflicting as to the names, however, Walter and Mattern, and his wife, Mary, disappear from the records.
