He received his early education in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and subsequently entered Pennsylvania State College, from which he graduated in 1914 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. After leaving college he was in the laboratory department of the American Window Glass Company of Jeannette in the capacity of a chemist.
