General Notes: Husband - Joseph Bishop Shugert

His father was a prominent citizen of York County, [Pennsylvania?] and sheriff as early as 1739.

He received a fine education, was a great reader, fine penman and chose the employment of civil engineer and surveyor, and was for some years employed on the Pennsylvania canal between Lewistown and York. Soon after his marriage he moved to Centre County. He was one of the earliest principals, if not the first, of the Bellefonte Academy, and one of the commissioners of Centre County in 1815 and 1816. A great portion of his active life was spent in the location of the public works of the State, and later in life as a surveyor and manager of the large land interests of Gen. Patton, Col. Samuel Miles, Gilbert Lloyd, and others in the region or neighborhood of his home in the Quaker settlement in Half Moon Valley, near Warriorsmark, at which place he died.
