He quit school at the age of 13 to help his dad in the coal mines. The mine was called the Toad Eye Coal Mine in Argentine, PA. He was paid 35 cents per day to help his dad load one boy car of coal a day. He was a miner at Hamilton's for $1.75 per day managing the team of horses used to haul the coal out of the mines. All worked in the WPA during the Depression building roads and digging ditches.
