General Notes: Husband - William Siggins

from Drum Cliff, county of Sligo, Ireland

Two derivations are given for this interesting name. Some say that it is purely English, and that it is formed by a combination of the diminutive and the patronymic, like Jenkins, its meaning being, “son of Sig.” Sig was a common Anglo-Saxon name derived, it is thought, from a word signifying “victory.” The present family, however, have a tradition of their own, giving their name a French origin. One branch spell it Segine. It is said that the original ancestor bearing this name was a French Huguenot, who, with his family, left France on account of religious persecution and settled in Scotland, where Calvinistic views were held in greater respect. The length of their stay there is not known, but some members of the family again emigrated, settling in the north of Ireland, where their authentic history begins.
