General Notes: Husband - Jacob Frederick Slagle


He was born in Washington, Pennsylvania. He attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington College in 1848. In 1849 he commenced the study of law with Hon. Thomas M. T. Mclennan in Washington, completed his course and was admitted to practice in 1852. He went to Pittsburgh and opened an office in January, 1853, and for a time practiced by himself, later forming a partnership with J. W. F. White. In 1861 he was elected City Solicitor of Pittsburgh.
In August, 1862, he enlisted in the army, assisted in raising a company and went into the service as lieutenant of Company D, 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was wounded in the face at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 6th, 1864. He was made a captain April 22nd, 1864. After he was wounded, he was detailed for duty in Judge Advocate General Molt's office; later he was appointed a judge advocate in the regular army with the rank of major and held that office until June 16th, 1865. On his return to Pittsburgh he was again elected city solicitor and filled the office from 1865 to 1872. He was elected judge of the County Courts in 1887, re-elected in 1897 and continued in the office until his death. He was a charter member of Duquesne Post 259, G. A. R., post commander in 1884 and again in 1894 and 1895, serving two years, and was also a member of the Veteran Legion.

After the death of her first husband, she went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to live with her parents.
