General Notes: Husband - Jacob Smathers

The Smathers or Smithers family (the latter orthography formerly prevailing) has been in Pennsylvania since 1740, in which year two brothers, Jacob and Robert Smithers, emigrated from England, Robert locating in Delaware, while Jacob selected Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where he subsequently married a German lady, and lived and died in that county.

He and his brother, Robert Smithers, came to America from Lancashire, England, about 1767. Both were then unmarried, aged eighteen and twenty-one years respectively. Robert settled in Delaware and Jacob settled in Luzerne and Columbia counties, Pennsylvania, on the north branch of the Susquehanna river. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, during which he had one of his hands shot off by an Indian. [HJC 1917 ii, 50]
