He had the advantage of a good education, attending first the public schools of Manor, Pennsylvania, and then taking a course in the Irwin Business College. He served as tax collector of the borough of Manor. He was also prominent in business circles, having succeeded to the livery business of his father upon the death of the latter. In politics he was a Democrat, and he was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Manor.
