General Notes: Husband - Abraham Martin Ziegler


His farm was a part of the Jacob Ziegler homestead at Maple Shade, Cranberry township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where he lived until he moved to Oil City, where he resided until the time of his death. In early life, he was a teacher and carpenter. Later, he was employed by the Standard Oil Company as field manager, tankage division, until he was retired on pension.

Abraham Martin Ziegler, in his 84th year, died at 10:15 o'clock this morning at the family home, 116 East 2d street, after an illness of about four weeks. Death was due to a complication of diseases incident to old age, following a severe cold. Mr. Ziegler was born September 22, 1836 at Maple Shade, this county and resided there the greater part of his life until removing to this city about 18 years ago. He was educated in the common schools and later graduated from the Franklin Academy. In the winters he taught school and followed the trade of carpenter in the summers. Later he became a contractor and then entered the employ of the National Transit Co. He assisted in the erection of the old Petroleum bridge, the second bridge in Oil City, on the site of where the present Petroleum bridge stands. After his removal to Oil City he served for a term as councilman from the Fifth Ward on the old Common Council. He was a devout member of Grace Methodist Episcopal church and a member of its official board and one of its stewards. He was a man of sterling qualities, honest and honorable and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends.
Mr. Ziegler was married on April 17, 1858, to Martha Smith who survives with the following children: Misses Florence, Candace and Belle at home, Mrs. W. J. Smith and C. M. Ziegler, of this city.

Mrs. Martha Ziegler.
Mrs. Martha Ziegler, aged 85 years, widow of the late A. M. Ziegler, died at 6:45 o'clock Saturday evening at the family residence, East Second and Short streets, after an illness of nearly four years.
Mrs. Ziegler was born July 1, 1838, near Maple Shade. On April 17, 1858 she was united in marriage with A. M. Ziegler. They resided there until 1904, when the family removed to Oil City, which has been their home since that time.
At an early age the deceased united with the Methodist Episcopal church and when she removed to this city, transferred her membership to Grace church. She was a devout Christian and was active in the work of the Ladies' Aid Society of Grace church, until taken ill about four years ago. Since that time she has been confined to her bed practically all the time, Mrs. Ziegler was an unusually active and energetic woman and was untiring in her devotion to her family.
Her husband died about four years ago. Surviving are four daughters and one son as follows, Misses Florence, Candace, and Belle Ziegler, all at home; Mrs. W. J. Smith and C. M. Ziegler, of Oil City. She also leaves four grandchildren and two great grand children.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. W. Robinson, of Grace M. E. church, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Grove Hill cemetery.
