The Derrick, Oil City, PA
Mar. 13, 1984
MAN, 38, DIES IN ACCIDENT
JAMES A. SNYDER, SR.
A 38 year old Franklin RD 3 man died Saturday, two hours after his car ran off Route 428 in Oakland Township, slamming against a tree and pitching him out of the auto.
James A. Snyder Sr. was pronounced dead at 4:58 am Saturday in the emergency room of Oil City Hospital.
Dr. Martin Heine of the emergency room staff pronounced Snyder dead.
Snyder was the second person to die this year in a traffic accident on Venango County highways.
The other victim was John T. (Chris) Hannigan, 49, of Titusville, whose car
smashed against a tractor-trailer rig February 18 on Route 26 in Plum Township. Coroner Jonathan H. Hutchinson ruled Snyder's death an accident, saying he
died as a result of a crushed chest and severe injuries to his head.
The accident occurred about 3 am, three miles south of Dempseytown, state police said.
Snyder was alone in his 1981 Mercury Capri, which was northbound on Route 428.
He lost control of the auto, which crossed the highway and veered off the left side of the pavement, striking three fence posts and a tree.
The impact hurled the driver out of the mangled vehicle.
When the accident was discovered, Community Ambulance Service was summoned. Emergency crews discovered the driver was still alive and transported the motorist to the hospital.
He was treated for approximately an hour in the hospital emergency room, but the efforts of medical personnel could not overcome the severity of his injuries.

JAMES A. SNYDER, SR.
James A. Snyder Sr. was born April 13, 1945, in Westfield, NY, the son of Floyd and Myrtle Heckathorne Snyder.
He was employed by Quaker State Oil Refining Corp. in the data processing department, where he served as assistant manager of systems development and coordinator of direct marketing.
Mr. Snyder served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam.
He married the former Kathy Straub on June 6, 1970, and she survived.
Mr. Snyder also is survived by his mother, Myrtle Snyder of Oil City; a son, James A. Snyder Jr. at home; two daughters, Melissa Snyder and Tracy Snyder, both at home; a brother, Floyd Snyder of Oil City; and a sister, Shirley E. Snyder of Titusville RD.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm today at the Morrison Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Howard Rose, pastor of the Oil City First Free Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Rynd Farm Cemetery.
