General Notes: Husband - Simon Busby Somers

He was born on the farm located next to his later home. He resided all his life with the exception of two years spent in Greensburg in that immediate vicinity. He received his education at the local public schools, learning during the summer holidays the details of farming. Upon completing his studies in these institutions, he took up farming as his occupation in life and continued uninterruptedly in this line until the year 1893. He then went to Greensburg, where he engaged in the butcher business, remaining therein for two years. In 1895, however, his fondness for the more rural kind of existence became so strong that he returned to the farm. His father's farm had been willed to the two sons at his death, and upon attaining his majority, he purchased his brother Henry's interest. In his father's time a considerable portion of the farm had remained uncleared, but Mr. Somers set himself to work to change this and then carried on operations which resulted in greatly increasing the fertility and productivity of the property. In the year 1896 the old farm buildings were burned and destroyed with them was the entire equipment of machinery, together with four head of horses and other stock, producing a loss estimated at about thirty-five hundred dollars. Mr. Somers at once proceeded to rebuild the barn, which had originally been put up by his father forty-eight years before, and he also replaced the other outbuildings. The house which was erected by Mr. Somers was a commodious and charming one, and was regarded as one of the most desirable residences in all that section. It stood on a well-improved highway, which ran from there to Greensburg, and which, with the exception of one mile, was paved with bricks the entire distance. On this fertile farm Mr. Somers carried on general farming, with a high degree of success. He disposed of the coal underlying his property to the Mutual Coal Company at a handsome figure.
In 1915 Mr. Somers was elected to the Board of Supervisors of Unity township, and in 1916 became president of that body. Unity township was divided into three road districts and over one of these Mr. Somers had charge. His district was known as the Pleasant Unity district and contained from seventy-five to eighty miles of road, including one mile of the Mutual Brick Road, which was the thoroughfare already mentioned as running to Greensburg and as paved with brick for six miles of its distance. In the other direction it ran to the town of Mount Pleasant. These roads, in charge of Mr. Somers, were always kept in the very best condition and were a credit to him and to the community which he served.
In his political faith Mr. Somers was a Democrat, and was a well known figure in political circles, although he was not a politician nor was he ambitious to fill public office at any time. He was a Lutheran in his religious belief and attended the same old Ridge or Hill Church that his father did before him and of which he was a deacon.
