General Notes: Husband - Henry Sphar

He, along with his siblings, Mattern, Haunce, Walter and Rebecca, made a journey westward to look for land in about 1780 near where his brother John had settled. Indians attacked the party near Scenery Hill, which was about 40 miles north of Short Creek, Virginia, (north of Wheeling), and two people were killed. Reports are conflicting as to the names; however, Walter and Mattern, and his wife, Mary, disappear from the records.

He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and later went with the family to Opequon Creek. He was a member of the Virginia Militia and helped put down Indian uprisings on the frontiers of southwestern Virginia. He was killed by the Indians on his property just north of Bristol, Virginia.
