He is believed to have been involved in both coal mining and oil wells in western Pennsylvania. When his sons were young men, he is said to have divided a portion of his business holdings among his two sons and three daughters, the sons using their share of the gift to move to Virginia and establish a lumber mill in the Hanover-New Kent county region. It is known that the sons did operate such a mill and that the daughters also lived in Virginia for many years. Records show that all the sons and at least one of the daughters were in Virginia by 1888. Benjamin Franklin and Ellen Breneman Camp lived for a time in Hanover County, where they attended Black Creek Baptist Church at Cold Harbor.

Civil War: He enlisted at Franklin, in Venango County, Pennsylvania, on July 25, 1861, in Company C, 10th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. On June 1, 1864, he transferred to the 191st Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, in the action of June 18, 1864. He was discharged by general order on July 25, 1865, some two months after the war's end.
