He was born in the eastern end of the Kishacoquillas valley of Pennsylvania, at what is became McAuleys Mill. He was a student at Airy View Academy, in Juniata County, in 1872. After reading medicine from the year 1873 with Dr. Samuel Maclay, of Milroy, he matriculated in the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, from which he was graduated March 12, 1877. On April 9, 1877, he began practise at Yeagertown. In April, 1879, he removed to Port Royal, Juniata County, and from that place, in 1882, he went to Milroy, and practised there for many years.
