Until he was fourteen years old he attended school, and then began farming, which he continued for many years, and for seven years when he was also employed in the Vandergrift Steel Mills. He owned a tract of thirty-three acres of land lying in Parks and Kiskiminetas townships, and also farmed his mother's property, making a specialty of raising fruit, which he sold at the Vandergrift markets. He belonged to the Grange and took an intelligent interest in its work. Politically he was an independent voter.
