He was reared in Bethel township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and obtained his education in the local common schools. He was postmaster at Kelly Station for the more than eighteen years, and also conducted a general store there. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, in which he was quite an active worker, having served in the office of deacon for six years. His wife also belonged to that church. In fraternal connection he was an Odd Fellow, belonging to White Rock Lodge, No. 979, I. O. O. F., at Center Valley, in Bethel township.
