After leaving the school room at the age of seventeen he farmed for others until his marriage. In the year of 1870 he moved to a homestead farm in Vernon Township, which with the passing years he improved from a wilderness to a well cultivated farm.
Although he and his wife had no children of their own, they reared and tenderly cared for three foster children.
