He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis by Hon. Milton G. Urner, where he was graduated in 1886, with the rank of cadet. He has made several voyages to China and Japan, and participated in the naval battle at Manila, May 1, 1898. He eventually retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
