General Notes: Husband - Harrison Wilson

He was only seven years of age at the time of his mother's death and when ten years old began earning his own livelihood, working at any honest labor that presented itself. His education was acquired in the common schools as he found opportunity to attend. Realizing, as the years passed by, that he would have much better business opportunities if he was a skilled laborer, he apprenticed himself to learn the cooper's trade, when seventeen years of age, and became a proficient workman in that line. In 1858 he removed to Westmoreland County, locating at Foxtown, where for three years he worked at the cooper's trade. He then turned his attention to farming, and in 1861 became the manager of the county poor farm, operating the land there for three years and seven months, while in 1865 he was made superintendent of the institution, which position he acceptably filled for eleven years, resigning in 1876. He then purchased a home in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where he then engaged in general farming. Mr. Wilson was a Democrat in his political faith, and served several terms as a member of the school board. His family were members of the Presbyterian church, and he was a regular attendant at the church services and contributed generously to the support of that and other churches, irrespective of creed.
