He was prothonotary of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, Western District. In the war of the Rebellion he entered the service in July, 1861, and became colonel of the Sixty-second Pennsylvania Regiment, succeeding Col. Samuel W. Black. As senior colonel he commanded the Second Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps, Army of Potomac, and served through the campaigns of McClellan, Burnside, Hooker, Meade, and Grant to the close of the conflict.
