He graduated at West Point in 1853, and entered the regular army. He served in McClellan's campaigns as personal aide on the staff of that general, and was afterwards placed in command of cavalry by Gen. P. H. Sheridan. In June, 1881, he was in command of Fort Clarke, on the Rio Grande, in Texas.
