He passed his youth in Chartiers township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, there receiving his elementary education in the district schools. After leaving school he began farming on the old homestead, which consisted of 106 acres of fertile and well-cultivated soil. He had two good gas wells on the place, and was a prosperous farmer, devoting considerable attention to stock raising. Politically he was a Republican, actively interested in the success of his party.
