His father was also a Kentuckian, married there, and had a numerous family.

He received his primary education at the public schools of his neighborhood, which was supplemented with a course of study at Washington College and at Jefferson College in Washington County, Pennsylvania, graduating from the latter in 1817. He then entered Princeton Theological Seminary, where he graduated, after which he resided for a time in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and finally moved to Jacksonville, Illinois, where he passed the rest of his days, dying at Monticello, Florida.
