He was five years in the mercantile business with his brother, R. J., under the firm name of R. J. & J. Tomb. For some years he was engaged in the manufacture of wagons and general wood work.

Civil War: He was in company H, 12th Pennsylvania R. C. for three years. He was a prisoner in Libby, for twenty-eight days.
