General Notes: Husband - Joseph Townsend

He was a Quaker, who came from England in 1712 and settled in Chester County in eastern Pennsylvania. His uncle, Richard Townsend, had preceded him, having been one of the small group who had accompanied William Penn aboard the "Welcome" and it was apparently he who was responsible for the arrival of Joseph Townsend. But Richard Townsend had no male descendent and Joseph Townsend therefore became the progenitor of the Pennsylvania Townsends.

He was a man of superior attainments, with unusual literary inclinations for those times-his small library, imported from England, being a rather remarkable affair.

He was born in Berkshire County, England. In 1710 he married, and in 1712, came to Pennsylvania with his wife and sister Joan. They were members of the Society of Friends, belonged first to Abington Meeting, coming thence to Concord Meeting in 1715, and in 1720 settling in Chester. Joseph was a weaver by trade. In 1725 he agreed with John Wanton of Rhode Island for the purchase of a tract of eight hundred acres in East Bradford, Chester County, and settled thereon in that year, but did not get a deed until 1727. This land adjoined the borough of West Chester.
