He was a member of a regiment that was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to serve in the Mexican war, and was killed in one of its hardest battles.

He and his wife were both born in Scotland, but emigrated at an early age to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they reared a family of children. He served in the Mexican war, and soon after that event was killed in California.
