His birth occurred in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and he was two years old when brought by his parents to the new home in Clarion County, where he was reared amidst the primitive scenes of frontier life. He learned the blacksmith trade, and followed that occupation in connection with farming, never leaving the old homestead in Monroe township.
