General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] Beaty

The most probable origin of the surname Beattie, Beatty or Beaty is from the Saxon word betye, meaning helper or henchman. The family is of Scotch origin, and at a very early date the surname is found in Dumfries, Aberdeenshire, and Kincardineshire, Scotland. It is doubtless analogous in origin to Beaton (Beeton and Bethune). A branch of the family went early to the north of Ireland and the birth records of 1890 in Ireland, indicate that in the Scotch provinces of Antrim, Down, Armagh and Tyrone there were about 3,000 of the name of Beattie. Most of the old American families of the surname Beatty, Beattie or Beaty trace their ancestry to the Scotch-Irish pioneers who came to this country in 1729. John Beatty, James Beatty and Christiana Beatty came from the north of Ireland, sailing May 20, and landing in New York, October 4, 1728, after a terrible voyage. Among those who succumbed to disease and hardships on the voyage were John Beatty, his wife and five children, also a child of Christiana Beatty. The Beattys surviving the voyage settled at Little Britain, New Windsor, New York. Christiana Beatty, widow of John, of Antrim, Ireland, was a sister of Charles Clinton and daughter of James Clin-ton, granddaughter of William Clinton, a grandson of Henry Clinton, second Earl of Lincoln. By a former wife, her husband had William, Elsie, John and James; John Beatty Jr. died on shipboard, leaving sons Arthur and James. Christiana (Clinton) was the mother of Charles, Mary, Martha and a child who died on the voyage. She married (second) James Scott and died in New York City in 1776-77, aged ninety.
Robert Beatty and brother Charles were early settlers at Marbletown, Ulster County, New York, and doubtless related to those just mentioned. Charles Beatty died in 1726-27. Robert had sons, Robert and Thomas. Robert Beatty Jr. died in Newburgh, New York, in 1779, leaving wife Mary and children: Thomas, John, Robert, Francis, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary.
