After completing his early schooling in Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, he attended Slippery Rock State Normal School, and then spent three months teaching in the Allegheny County schools. He began his business career at Akron, Ohio, with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and beginning in 1919 was associated in business with D. L. Adams. Politically he was a Democrat. He held membership in the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Knights of Pythias.
