General Notes: Husband - Daniel Vincent

At the time of the capture of Fort Freeland he had been but a short time married and after he was taken away to Canada a prisoner, his wife made her way back to her parents in New Jersey. Three years rolled by without tidings, but she did not give up hope and finally he did return. He had been adopted into the tribe capturing him and claimed by a squaw whose warrior had been killed in battle at Fort Freeland. He was an expert rifle shot and after a time was permitted to hunt, but never without two Indian companions. By seeming content with his lot he was allowed a certain amount of freedom which he employed in becoming familiar with all the peculiarities of the country and planning a route by which he intended to escape. He finally lured his companions as far away as they would go, then after a fight in which both the red men were slain, he struck out for his own home in New Jersey, where his wife had returned. After incredible hardships he reached his family bearded and unrecognizable.
