He was graduated at Princeton College in 1861 and studied theology at Princeton and the Union Theological Seminary, and was pastor at Irvington, New York, 1865-69; Central Church, Boston, 1869-76; Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, 1876-83; and Professor of Church History in Lane Theological Seminary, 1882.
