He resided on a homestead of 100 acres, a part of the original purchase of his grandfather, Thomas Welsh, excepting the few years his father lived in Allegheny. He was educated at the Pittsburgh public schools, and after his father returned to Jefferson township he was engaged in farming.
He and his wife had seven children. He was a Democrat, and both he and wife were members of the Presby­terian church.
