He obtained his early education in the local public schools, including the high school, then attended Washington and Jefferson College for two years, after which he went into business with his father. In 1922 he was made secretary and treasurer of the company, the Pennsylvania Refining Company.
He was a Republican in politics and belonged to the German Lutheran Church and the following organizations: Argyle Lodge, No. 540, Free and Accepted Masons, past master in 1924, Chicora, Pennsylvania; Butler Chapter, R. A. M. No. 273, Butler, Pennsylvania; New Castle Consistory, thirty-second degree, New Castle; and the Ridgeview Country Club, the Foxburg Country Club, and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, of which he was treasurer.
