He received most of his education at Fredonia Institute, and when eighteen years of age commenced to teach school. He was thus engaged for a year at Leech's Corners, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and then decided to enter business. For three years he was connected with the Packard Hardware Company, at Greenville; was then employed by J. L. Muntz for about a year and a half, in a clerical capacity, and still later became identified with the Morris Hardware Company, of Youngstown, Ohio, as traveling salesman. After holding the last named position for a year and a half, he accepted a position with the W. W. Lawrence Paint Company, of Pittsburgh, as its representative in the field and manager of the business at Altoona, with headquarters at that point.
He was deeply and actively interested in fraternal work, being a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (Alhambra Lodge No. 293). In politics he was a Republican.
