It is not clear which of his father's wives was his mother.

He was a surgeon in the army during the Civil War, and had charge of a hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, also of the Benton barracks, at St. Louis, Missouri. He died while in the service among the Indians. He was a distinguished surgeon in his day. Previous to the war he was located in Birmingham, where he had a practice to the extent of $10,000 per annum.
