He was a mechanic of exceptional ability, and his line of work soon took him to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he organized the Novelty Machine Works, the only works of the kind west of Philadelphia. He was a man of literary tastes and during his lifetime collected one of the finest private libraries in the country.
