He became a farmer, his farm being situated in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a strong Republican, and a member of the Lutheran church.

He lived for many years on the old homestead and there died.

He served in the Civil War, doing guard duty at Washington, D.C.
